ASC Portland Success Story Spotlight
Our Participant Stories: Max Spencer-Veale
Hello, my name is Max and I am 10 years old.
I have been sailing with the Andrew Simpson Centre on Portland since I was 6 years old, starting with the Sea Monkey’s sailing week during the summer holidays which was great fun and we tried lots of different activities.
When I was 7 years old, I came back to the centre to do the ‘Extreme Adventure’ week, which was so much fun I did it the next year too!
The year after that, I did the RYA stage 1 and 2 courses and joined the Andrew Simpson Centres Saturday morning Sailing Club and, that’s when I really started to enjoy sailing dinghies.
The next year I chose the windiest week in the autumn to do the RYA stage 3 sailing course (which was great fun!) and joined the Saturday afternoon Improvers Sailing Club. And, last summer I completed the RYA stage 4 course.
I really enjoy learning to rig the boats and sailing with the instructors at the Andrew Simpson Centre. The instructors are all really friendly, they have helped me improve my sailing skills and my confidence on the water.
I have met lots of new friends at the Saturday Sailing Club, the Portland Andrew Simpson Centre and Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is a great place to sailing and hang out.
I like sailing the RS Zest sailing dinghy by myself, taking part in the fun races and going fast when it’s windy!
I’m really looking forward to going back in the spring this year to do some more sailing with the Andrew Simpson Centres Team
Sailing a dinghy by myself has really help my confidence, I have found a sport I love doing and the Saturday club is something to look forward to at the weekend (and I get fish & chips as a treat after sailing!!)
