Reflections on participant stories

Heather Thomas, ASF funded sailor, to skipper Maiden in the Ocean Globe Race

Back in 2015, Heather Thomas was fortunate enough to win the chance to participate in the Pacific Ocean crossing of the 2015-16 Clipper Round the World Race, supported by the Andrew Simpson Foundation (ASF) and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.

Eight years on and Heather’s love and passion for sailing and ocean racing has only grown stronger. Ruth Brady, ASF Fundraising Manager, caught up with Heather as she prepares to sail in the Ocean Globe Race 2023 as Maiden’s Skipper.

“Taking part in the Clipper Round the World Race changed my life, I grew up in the sailing community but would never have been able to take part in ocean racing without the support of the Andrew Simpson Foundation. I have now sailed and worked all over the world and am especially proud to be the Skipper for Maiden. It is fantastic to be part of a crew and an organisation which is passionate about empowering and educating young girls and women around the world”.

We are really proud of all that Heather has achieved and are excited to follow her and the crew of The Maiden Factor as they embark on their next adventure. Good luck!
