Climate Change Relay Baton Passes Through ASC Portsmouth
The Running Out Of Time climate change relay baton passed through Andrew Simpson Centre Portsmouth on July 1st, as Bumpa and Nicola from our Marine Education Hub sailed the baton to Eastney Beach ferry pontoon.
On a 29 day, 210 stage and 2,436km mission, the relay aims to supercharge climate change awareness whilst celebrating great climate work and inspiring action.
The relay launched at Ben Nevis before culminating its extraordinary journey at Big Ben on July 4th. Thousands of runners, walkers, wheelers, cyclists, and now sailors have helped deliver the message in the baton, calling for action to cut emissions, restore nature and support those hardest hit by climate change.
The baton has been through around 12,000 hands already, and it’s all about getting people talking about climate change.

We’d like to say a big thank you to RS Electric Boats who provided an E-rib to provide safety cover to follow the baton along, which was then passed on to Meon Junior School as it worked its way through Portsmouth before heading towards Brighton.
With sailing being powered by the wind it is in nature an eco-friendly sport, however we are aware that there is still lots to be done to decrease the carbon footprint caused within the boating industry. Our Portsmouth centre utilises solar panels and the Andrew Simpson Foundation is very keen to help educate and raise awareness of environmental matters with the thousands of young people we see each year.
As an RYA Training Centre, we recognise that the protection of the environment is an integral part of our business. We also support community water quality testing and as a World Sailing partner we follow and implement their rules of conduct when sailing to reduce potential impacts on the environment – which you can learn more about here.
