A spark of light during darkest hours
Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson was tragically killed in a sailing accident during the America’s Cup on the 9th of May 2013. July 24th 2013 marks the Founding of the ASF as a way to continue his vision and passion for sailing opportunities for all.
May 2014
The first Andrew Simpson Centre opens
Originally named the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre, ASC Portland is opened by Iain Percy and Sir Ben Ainslie at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA).
September 2014
Bart’s Bash exceeds expectations and breaks records
The first Bart’s Bash global sailing race took place on September 21st 2014 and raised an incredible £366,000 for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.

The event achieved a Guiness World Record for the largest sailing race in 24 hours.
Research partnership with the University of Winchester
A pilot study was commissioned from the University of Winchester, showing that sailing offers young people the chance to practice and demonstrate teamwork, problem solving, decision making, communication and resilience, as well as being a positive impact on their mental health and wellbeing.

ASC Portsmouth opens to the public
The newest Centre was opened to deliver a full programme of RYA sailing, windsurfing and powerboating courses, a range of paddle sports, outdoor activities and an extensive instructor training programme. The Centre also established a strong partnership with Portsmouth Sail Training Trust (PSTT) to raise the aspiration of young people in Portsmouth.

ASC Reading is opened
Following a merger with the Berkshire Sailing Training Centre (BSTC), a local Charity based at Burghfield Sailing Club, our Reading Centre was opened.

Our first international Centre is opened
ASC Lake Garda, based at Campione del Garda c/o Campione Univela was opened at the world-class sailing venue situated on the shores of Lake Garda in Italy.
September 2018
Bike4Bart brings cyclists and sailors together in Dorset
Sir Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy OBE and cyclist Philippa York came together to take part in Bike4Bart in memory of Andrew Simpson. More than 250 riders took part and saw riders challenging themselves to three different routes along the panoramic views of the Dorset coast.

Skipper Programme Mossel Bay South Africa
ASF grows and expands overseas
In 2019, over 19,000 individuals came through the doors of the Andrew Simpson Centres. We also established a partnership with the Skipper Programme in Mossel Bay in South Africa to bring opportunities to young people in the area. The Skipper Programme, through the wonderful sport of sailing, is striving to put dreams back into local youths’ lives. Important social skills are taught on a daily basis, skills that are necessary to achieve their dreams.

Birmingham Centre opens
Our Birmingham Centre is opened, providing more opportunities to get more people out on the water in the midland region.

Partnership with Provo Sailing Academy
We established a winter programme in Turks and Caicos to support young people who were affected by Hurricane Irma. Through the Discover Sailing and Train the Trainers Programme, opportunities were made possible by funds allocated through our partnership with Sail Aid UK, creating both experiences and career opportunities that were life changing for all who participate.

High performance training opportunities for aspiring athletes
Powered by the Andrew Simpson Centres, Performance Academy was opened to take young sailors to the next level providing high quality training programmes to support them in their advanced sailing careers.

30,000 individuals given the opportunity to sail
In 2021, 30,000 individuals came through the doors of the Andrew Simpson Centres.

Andrew Simpson Yachting opens in Haslar Marina
Andrew Simpson Yachting is a new Training Centre of excellence based in Haslar Marina in Gosport, on the Solent.

Education for the next generation of sailors
In September 2021 we launched our brand new Water-based Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Outdoors) in partnership with Gosport and Fareham Multi Academy Trust.
Future Plans
New not-for-profit Centres due to open soon
We are aiming to increase the number of young people we are working with to 50,000 by 2025.
